Amestris

The nation-state of Amestris is the main backdrop for Hagane no Rekinjitsushi (Full Metal Alchemist). It is a military state with shaky relations with its neighbouring countries: Drachma to the north; Creata to the west; Arego to the South; and Xing to the east. There is the infamous Brigg Mountain Range that serves as a natural border between Amestris and Drachma. The Great Desert also serves as a wide, natural border between Amestis and Xing.

The country is divided into five main regions, all of which a military base is located serving as the main political institution. One can say that it is a decentralized state since each region has its own top commander and that they all have their own affairs and issues. Amestris also has a territory to its south: the nation of Ishbal. A great civil war was fought in the arid nation which caused a deep divide between native Amestrians and Ishbalians.

Throughout most of the series (excluding the final chapter), King Bradley serves as the sovereign of Amestris. Though he appears to be an old man, he is quite agile and sly. Like in most governments, there are people who vye for his position. Colonel Roy Mustang, General Olivier Armstriong and General Grumman are the most popular characters who were featured in the manga as the main competitors for the "throne."
